Our known history of the magnificent Paskapoo Slopes, in Calgary's southwest quadrant, dates back, at least, 3,000 years. Back to the days when nomadic aboriginal tribes would use the slopes as a place to spend their winters. We know this because of archaelogical excavations in 1999 which revealed much of the history, in the form of buffalo bones, beads, fireplaces etc.
It is very sad that this city has allowed development to overtake history. The slopes are sensitive to the environment and erode easily due to underground springs. What we should treasure, and protect, we are destroying. Sadly, we do not appear to be doing a very good job as stewards of this planet. |
